Eye Tie Sci Fy
Hey this is a classic Italian retro science fiction. There were a bunch of them made around this time and shared special effects and production quality. An acquired taste for retro fans but I like them.

It odd to think this came out in 1978 one year after Star Wars. I come across as something from the mid 60's. But hey, you got to love an older Science Fiction movie no matter how silly it is. Love the green martinis in space. I wonder if it a take on the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. That is from 1978. Same year. :)
This movie is by no means perfect. It's more of a C-movie than a B-movie, but it somehow remains enjoyable. The awkward dubbing, garish costumes, flashlight guns, and lovely ladies in the cast all combine into something you can't quite help but like.

Unisex robots don't make good warriors
Two things going on here, a silly movie amateurishly done and Julie's perfect body. Sources tell me the actress was originally from Finland ..
What's with the one-sided battles? Waves and waves of robots felled by pen lights and nothing remotely suggesting they can put up a fight. With a drum beat.
SF of the 50s often featured caves; it is astonishing how many old SF films have scenes in caves: Robot Monster, Teenagers from outer Space, Zontar the thing from Venus, the one with with the telepathic chicken I can't remember than name, anything with Peter Graves, on down .. caves! In this one from the 70s, like classic Star Trek, they light the caves with funky colors.
The unscientific motion of the ships can be explained by the credits at the end of the movie where 'transparencies' are mentioned. The guy slid transparencies around.
There is some very unscientific dialogue .. once at least while in outer space 'west' and 'east' are mentioned .. and another time he says 'let's check our coordinates, our objective is 1.5!'
Anyway, Alfonsio Bresca, or Al Brady if you prefer, began as a director of sword and sandals movies and moved on to screw up pretty much every genre. He liked Julie, or Kristi Somersalo as she was born, and she appeared in a number of his SF films.
How often does actor Antonio Sabato turn his head to the right, to the left, back to the right, to the left, like a bird, with the camera practically in his face. Sometimes it looks like he's trying to not bang his nose on it. No one is spared. So many extreme close ups in this movie.

You'll add a star or two if crappy SF is your thing
Some folks love this movie. There are some great reviews of it at IMDB.
But it just bores me silly, I'm afraid. Everything about it is so stiff--the movements, the line delivery, the space ship effects--that I can't even enjoy the goofiness of it. It's dying for some character to be truly over-the-top eccentric, for someone to just emote. (Although I do like the crew's giggly reaction to destroying two alien ships near the beginning.) The best of the worst SF is, for me, bizarrely excessive and awkward, not just aloof and boring.

War of the Robots
Yeah! Even with the pen lights, the metal detectors, the repeated to death "over and out", it still beat "Battleship". Had to watch it all the way through, but was worth it. Yeah!

This movie is in a class of it's own.
It starts out a little slow, but keeps getting better and better.
Don't turn it down, just take a few breaks every now and then.

Not so bad
I'm not sure why anyone has compared this movie to Star Wars, other than some fighting with, "light swords". This movie reminded me more of a militarized version of the classic Star Trek TV series. It's actually not bad at all, cheesy, yes, but not bad. You can actually follow the plot to a point, and everyone has to love the character of Koobah, who joins the crew of the Trissi. The acting is pretty bad, but it makes you laugh more than cringe. I didn't think I'd make it through the whole 100 minutes, but I did and don't regret that time!

Yes, this is the right term for the film. It wasn't good but I managed to watch to the end on my Nokia N9.
